Great adventures, dangerous maritime battles, legendary treasures – the fascination with pirates dates back centuries. Arnold Böcklin painted Attack by pirates in 1886. Three rowboats are being tossed around by the foamy sea by an island with stone buildings in the classical Italian style – the pirate assault seems risky.
