Around 5000 men serving under Duke Adolf V of Berg are said to have entered Cologne on the evening of 14 October 1268. This was followed by a battle in which the House of Overstolz and residents of Cologne were able to defeat the invaders. Over 500 years later, this battle inspired Flemish painters Gustave Buschmann (1818 – 1852) and Edouard Jean Conrad Hamman (1819 – 1888) to make a painting. However, it’s questionable whether this battle was indeed quite as dramatic and theatrical as it’s depicted here…
