Departure

Are we not all constantly setting out on new journeys? Does not something new always begin, thereby overshadowing what has only just entered our lives? “And every beginning holds a magic of its own.” This famous line from Hermann Hesse’s poem ‘Steps’ also invites us to look closely at the moment of departure, to let it sink in and to celebrate/honour it.

A personal selection from Cologne's museums

On 15 October 1901, a new era was inexorably dawning: electrically powered trams were running for the first time in Cologne, both on the Ring route and between the Cathedral and Flora. Whereas passengers had previously travelled by horse-drawn carriage, they were now hurtling through the city’s narrow streets and alleys at what some found to be a frightening speed.
