Especially in our home city of Cologne, where life in the immediate neighbourhood – the ‘Veedel’ – and the simple joys of everyday life are the subject of countless stories and songs. Garden gnomes and swing seats. Leaf blowers and wire mesh fences. Gossip in the stairwell and that pram always in the way. Techno music after midnight and smelly rubbish piles on the balcony. Neighbourhoods have many faces. Ugly ones and beautiful ones. Okay, you can’t really choose who you live opposite. But – who else will water the flowers or feed the fish when you’re away on holiday, who will take the parcels, who will lend a helping hand when you’re short of flour for a cake, who will lend a sympathetic ear in various situations? Three cheers for the neighbourhood!
