At long last

A personal selection from Cologne's museums

Sometimes, a miracle requires a keen eye and a special crane from Colonia. The 1955 Mercedes 300 SL Coupé, with its shimmering silver finish and weighing almost one and a half tonnes, caused quite a headache before it was moved into the MAKK – Museum of Applied Arts in Cologne: As this gem of the design collection could not be brought into the building via the foyer and, despite its gull-wing doors, was unsuitable for air transport, it was decided to take a detour via the roof into the inner courtyard. There, the rare car was hoisted into place using heavy machinery in a spectacular operation.
