Metropolis

When James Webb (1835–1895), the English globetrotter and distinguished landscape painter, found himself in Cologne in 1869, the artist’s imagination seems to have run a little wild – in his monumental panorama of Cologne, created under the influence of his stay there, he gives the Rhineland metropolis an almost oriental flavour: Against the imposing backdrop of Groß St. Martin, the Bollwerk and the Stapelhaus, a tangle of barges and sailing ships jostles on the water, along the Deutz bank and on the opposite shore.
